SUMMARY:Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders in Youth with Psychiatric Disorders- Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n  \n\nDetails\nJoin us for the Recovery Science quarterly webinar series\, an initiative sponsored by the Opioid Response Network and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry\, and organized by the Recovery Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital\, focusing on youth substance use treatment and recovery. \nWe’re honored to have Dr. Amy Yule speak at the Opioid Response Network webinar series on Wednesday\, December 10th at 12:00pm EST. Her talk is titled Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders in Youth with Psychiatric Disorders. \nSubstance misuse and substance use disorders (SUD) begin in adolescence and peak in prevalence in young adults. Children with mental health conditions are at increased risk to develop a SUD\, and there is a higher prevalence of SUD in adolescents with a mental health condition versus those without a mental health condition. Staff and clinicians who work with youth with mental health symptoms and conditions across clinical and community settings need to be prepared to identify and address at risk substance use and SUD. This presentation will review adverse effects associated with opioid\, stimulant\, and other substance use in youth such as drug overdose\, cannabis hyperemesis syndrome\, and cannabis induced psychosis. The presentation will also review strategies to decrease risk associated with substance use in youth. Lastly\, the presentation will discuss integrated treatment for youth with co-occurring SUD and psychiatric disorders with a focus on pharmacotherapy. \nFunding for this initiative was made possible (in part) by grant no. 1H79TI088037 from SAMHSA. The views expressed in written conference materials or publications and by speakers and moderators do not necessarily reflect the official policies of the Department of Health and Human Services; nor does mention of trade names\, commercial practices\, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. \n\n\n\nSpeakers (2)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nAmy Yule \nVice Chair of Addiction PsychiatryBoston Medical Center\n\n\nDr. Amy Yule is the Vice Chair of Addiction Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University. Her research is focused on examining interventions to prevent substance use disorders in youth with psychiatric disorders and reduce harm associated with substance use. She is also focused on evaluating treatments for individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders including medication for youth with bipolar disorder\, community-based treatment for youth with psychosis\, and insurance-based time limited care management programs. Her clinical practice is within the CATALYST clinic which serves youth with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric disorders as well as their family in a multidisciplinary primary care-based clinic at BMC. \nShow more\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nBrandon Bergman \nAssociate DirectorRecovery Research Institute\n\n\nDr. Bergman will be introducing our speaker and coordinating the event.

SUMMARY:Psychedelic-assisted treatments for Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health- Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Register here- and more info\n  \n\n\nThis session is part of NAHEWD’s national webinar series Bridging HIV and SUD: Innovations in the Field. The series will highlight various innovative models and approaches to treating substance use disorder (SUD) in people at risk for and living with HIV. As clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted therapies progress\, the potential of approved psilocybin and MDMA-assisted treatments for anxiety\, mood\, and substance use disorders (SUDs) looks increasingly promising. Clinicians interested in new mental healthcare treatment options for SUDs can learn about current treatment designs and published study outcomes to consider how psychedelic-assisted therapies might serve people at risk for and living with HIV.\n\nLearning objectives:\n• Identify hypothesized mechanisms of psychedelic-assisted interventions for substance use disorders.\n• Critically examine key clinical components of psychedelic-assisted mental health treatments.\n• Describe research to date on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of mental health conditions.

SUMMARY:The Peer Model- Ethics in Efficacy
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\nWednesday\, December 3\, 2025 @ 12:00-1:30pm ET\nDescription\nStatistics show that when peer services are delivered with adherence to the peer model and within recovery-oriented systems\, they are highly effective for the participants and the systems employing them (SAMHSA). While the knowledge and experience brought into organizations and their systems by peers are extremely important\, there are also great challenges as most of these systems operate in paradigms that differ greatly from the recovery-oriented environments peers are most effective in\, leading to poor outcomes when appropriate support is lacking. We must ask: What are the ethical considerations in hiring\, training\, supervising\, and retaining people with lived-living experience in existing organizations? This workshop provides ethically informed\, policy-driven\, equitable\, and inclusive approaches that can be intentionally implemented within organizations of all kinds. \nPresenters\n \nPaul Alves\, NCPRSS\, RCPF\, is the Founder of Choice Recovery Coaching\, Inc.\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Coaching Recovery across the continuum of care and systems. He has been developing the peer recovery workforce across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond\, focusing on wellness recovery-oriented systems (WROS) to diminish stigma while enhancing systems efforts and multiplying community wellness. Alves is a person in recovery from substance use disorder\, food addiction\, and mental health affliction. He has presented internationally on topics from mental wellness\, resiliency during Covid-19\, peer supervision\, working with multi-disciplinary teams\, recovery\, and more. With a positive attitude and contemporary perspective\, he believes that all individuals have the ability to recover. \n \nMeghann Perry\, CARC\, RCPF\, is a keynote speaker\, educator\, and addiction recovery coach professional who has spent the last decade working in peer support\, recovery advocacy\, and program design. She creates innovative interventions blending theatre\, storytelling\, and coaching and is best known for two groundbreaking programs: Recovery Storytelling and Embodied Storytelling. Perry delivers high-impact presentations on storytelling as a tool for healing and advocacy for highly stigmatized conditions for organizations like NAADAC\, Peer Recovery Center of Excellence\, and the Hazelden Foundation. She is the founder of Meghann Perry Group and leads a team of talented\, dedicated facilitators offering innovative\, revolutionary recovery programs. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will be able to name three ethical challenges of policy and culture that peers may face within the relationship between peer and employer.\nParticipants will be able to identify how these challenges impact service delivery and the ability of the peer to be effective in their role.\nParticipants will be able to describe how a recovery oriented system of care addresses these challenges within organizations and identify several ROSC-based policies that enable better efficacy.\n\nContent Level\nBeginning and Intermediate. \n\nBeginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition\, treatment method\, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.\nIntermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge\, possibly following a brief overview of basic information\, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.\n\nInteractivity\nPolls and Q&A. \nPrice\nEducation is FREE to all professionals.

SUMMARY:Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) Approach to Substance Use/Misuse Intervention- ORN Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n  \nFor families and communities impacted by the opioid and substance use disorder epidemic\, finding a way to lovingly support a friend or family member struggling with using substances\, while still maintaining healthy boundaries\, can often be challenging. \nWe are excited to host an introductory presentation on Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). The CRAFT approach to substance use/misuse intervention teaches family members how to support and communicate with someone who has a substance use disorder or who is misusing drugs and alcohol. This approach focuses on using positive reinforcement to combat substance use and encourage steps toward recovery. CRAFT can help family members support a loved one without relying on confrontation or shame. Instead\, loved ones focus on rewarding positive behaviors to help guide behavior change with empathy and care. \nThis presentation will feature a panel of experts familiar with CRAFT and have trained and/or implemented CRAFT in their communities. There will be time for Q & A following the presentations. \nFor more information and registration. \nProgram provided by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) with support from ORN.
