Through using the clinical skills and interventions of attachment theory from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)\, participants will learn how to access systemic doorways into the neural networks that hold traumatic distress beneath addictive processes and utilize relationships as a curative factor. Participants will learn didactic information as well as explore this approach to addiction treatment by viewing an actual therapy session demonstrating working with addiction using EFT. The webinar will demonstrate clear\, basic EFT interventions that can be immediately applied to a clinician’s practices that elicit therapeutic opportunities for healing emotional distress within the context of their client’s relationships. \nPresenter\n \nMichael Barnett\, MA\, EdS\, Certified Emotionally Focused Therapy Trainer\, is a licensed clinical psychotherapist in both California and Georgia with over 30 years of clinical experience\, as well as a certified supervisor and trainer in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT). Barnett founded the Atlanta Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy in 2008 and directed it for over 15 years before moving to Southern California in 2020. He currently co-directs the EFT Center of Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n  \nFor families and communities impacted by the opioid and substance use disorder epidemic\, finding a way to lovingly support a friend or family member struggling with using substances\, while still maintaining healthy boundaries\, can often be challenging. \nWe are excited to host an introductory presentation on Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). The CRAFT approach to substance use/misuse intervention teaches family members how to support and communicate with someone who has a substance use disorder or who is misusing drugs and alcohol. This approach focuses on using positive reinforcement to combat substance use and encourage steps toward recovery. CRAFT can help family members support a loved one without relying on confrontation or shame. Instead\, loved ones focus on rewarding positive behaviors to help guide behavior change with empathy and care. \nThis presentation will feature a panel of experts familiar with CRAFT and have trained and/or implemented CRAFT in their communities. We will explore the latest epidemiological data\, with a focus on the prevalence and trends of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in the United States. Diagnostic criteria and screening tools to assess for alcohol use disorders will be discussed. Additionally\, we will examine evidence-based interventions to treat alcohol use disorders and support individuals in their recovery. \nDescription\nBased on findings from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)\, 29.5 million people ages 12 and older (10.5%) met criteria for an alcohol use disorder (AUD). There are also more than 140\,000 deaths annually attributed to excessive alcohol use. \nTo equip the healthcare workforce to better address this public health concern\, this training is designed to provide an introductory overview of alcohol use disorders. We will explore the latest epidemiological data\, with a focus on the prevalence and trends of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in the United States. Diagnostic criteria and screening tools to assess for alcohol use disorders will be discussed. While the knowledge and experience brought into organizations and their systems by peers are extremely important\, there are also great challenges as most of these systems operate in paradigms that differ greatly from the recovery-oriented environments peers are most effective in\, leading to poor outcomes when appropriate support is lacking. We must ask: What are the ethical considerations in hiring\, training\, supervising\, and retaining people with lived-living experience in existing organizations? This workshop provides ethically informed\, policy-driven\, equitable\, and inclusive approaches that can be intentionally implemented within organizations of all kinds. \nPresenters\n \nPaul Alves\, NCPRSS\, RCPF\, is the Founder of Choice Recovery Coaching\, Inc.\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Coaching Recovery across the continuum of care and systems. He has been developing the peer recovery workforce across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond\, focusing on wellness recovery-oriented systems (WROS) to diminish stigma while enhancing systems efforts and multiplying community wellness. Alves is a person in recovery from substance use disorder\, food addiction\, and mental health affliction. He has presented internationally on topics from mental wellness\, resiliency during Covid-19\, peer supervision\, working with multi-disciplinary teams\, recovery\, and more. With a positive attitude and contemporary perspective\, he believes that all individuals have the ability to recover. \n \nMeghann Perry\, CARC\, RCPF\, is a keynote speaker\, educator\, and addiction recovery coach professional who has spent the last decade working in peer support\, recovery advocacy\, and program design. She creates innovative interventions blending theatre\, storytelling\, and coaching and is best known for two groundbreaking programs: Recovery Storytelling and Embodied Storytelling. Perry delivers high-impact presentations on storytelling as a tool for healing and advocacy for highly stigmatized conditions for organizations like NAADAC\, Peer Recovery Center of Excellence\, and the Hazelden Foundation. Her talk is titled Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders in Youth with Psychiatric Disorders. \nSubstance misuse and substance use disorders (SUD) begin in adolescence and peak in prevalence in young adults. Children with mental health conditions are at increased risk to develop a SUD\, and there is a higher prevalence of SUD in adolescents with a mental health condition versus those without a mental health condition. Staff and clinicians who work with youth with mental health symptoms and conditions across clinical and community settings need to be prepared to identify and address at risk substance use and SUD. For many\, alcohol consumption significantly increases between Thanksgiving and New Year’s for a variety of reasons\, including family dynamics\, increased social gatherings\, holiday traditions\, and increased feelings of loneliness\, sadness\, or isolation. This training will review strategies on how to avoid or reduce alcohol consumption\, as well as discuss techniques for how to talk about one’s alcohol use during a particularly stressful time of year. \nIntended audience\nProviders\, nurses\, social workers\, psychologists\, peer supports\, other clinical staff\, and non-clinicians. \nSpeakers\nJudith Austin\, MSN\, PMHNP-BC\, CARN-AP (she/her) \nJudith is a clinical nurse educator for or Boston Medical Center’s (BMC) Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance and a board certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who has a private practice and works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility. Judith earned her master’s in nursing from Regis College and is certified as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board. \nAzure Bergeron\, BSN\, RN\, CARN (she/her) \nAzure is a registered nurse at Boston Medical Center with over 20 years of experience in trauma and intensive care. She is a graduate of the Grayken Addiction Nursing Fellowship program\, where she received specialized training in caring for patients with Substance Use Disorder and co-occurring disorders. Azure holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and has various certifications\, including Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN)\, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)\, and Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR). \nAmy Fitzpatrick\, MD (she/her) \nAmy is an assistant professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a primary care physician in the Women’s Health Group at Boston Medical Center. She also conducts clinical research in addiction medicine and serves as an expert consultant for MCSTAP\, the Massachusetts Consultation Service for the Treatment of Addiction and Pain. In her role at Boston Medical Center\, she works in the Office-Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) clinic and attends the Inpatient Addiction Consult Service for four weeks per year. Dr. Fitzpatrick’s other interests include medical student and resident education\, and she is board-certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine. \nAl Ortiz\, CARC (he/him) \nAl is a man in recovery and a certified recovery coach with seven years of experience working in the addiction field. He is also a consultant with Boston Medical Center’s (BMC) Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance. As the program manager of Recovery Support Services at the Holyoke Health Center\, he is privileged to work in the same community in which he lives\, and to identify himself as part of the population he serves. As a father and advocate for his community\, he is passionate about educating others and considers it a gift to wake up each day excited to support and inspire change within his community. \nObjectives\nAt the end of this training\, participants will have the knowledge necessary to: \n\nDiscuss potential causes for why alcohol consumption increases during the holiday season.\nList at least three interventions to reduce the harm of alcohol consumption.\nIdentify strategies for how to discuss alcohol use\, reduced consumption strategies\, and avoidance of triggers.\n\nSponsored by\nBoston Medical Center Grayken Center for Addiction TTA\, Department of Public Health\, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (DPH/BSAS) \nFunding for out of state attendees is provided by the Opioid Response Network (ORN). \nFunding for this initiative was made possible (in part) by grant no. 1H79TI085588-02 from SAMHSA.
